Description

Guys guys guys!  Know what's coming up??

Okay, so Woodwalker's publication, right.  But I mean cooler than that?

Ghost season!

Blue ghost fireflies are native to my home ground in southern Appalachia, and they are just about as close to magic as you can get in this world.  Unlike other fireflies, they don't flash.  They glow steadily, emitting a faint, moonlight-blue light.  They float a few inches off the ground, and when they gather in masses... it's a sight that can't be described.  Like a silent fairy slow-dance.

There's no magic in Woodwalker.  It's not something I planned--- most of my favorite books have some magical element to them.  But as I wrote the first novel, I realized I was so much more drawn to pulling out the magic in our own world rather than making something up.  Our world is incredible, and the religion and associated spirituality in Woodwalker are designed to reflect that.  The blue ghost fireflies, along with foxfire (basically glowing mushrooms--also real) are sacred to the Wood-folk, and they're one of the most important things Mae longs for in her exile.

If you live near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pisgah National Forest, or DuPont State Forest, grab a red-shielded flashlight and head out to find these amazing little creatures (ask a ranger if they know of good places to look for them, that's what we're here for).  Great Smokies also hosts an annual Firefly Festival to celebrate another amazing insect, the synchronous fireflies, which are a whole other ballgame--- they coordinate their flashes, so it's like a silent forest rave.  But each time I've participated in the Firefly Festival, I've seen the blue ghosts there, too, just doing their thing on the forest floor while their flashy cousins party in the branches.

Woohoo!  Nature is awesome!

I've been posting a lot more progress shots and doodles over on my Facebook page, so if you'd like more artwork, I'd love it if you gave me a like!

Woodwalker will be published through HarperCollins on May 17, 2016!
