Thranduil and son by Deisi Thranduil and son by Deisi
I just now realized that I have no pictures of my version of Legolas on my devArt page. I have lots on my website, [link] but none that I deemed good enough to put up here. So, let me give you a little blurb on why I have overhauled the movie Legolas.
I realize that this may cost me many of the friends I have here, but I cannot stand watching Orlando Bloom try to act! Legolas is my favorite character in the books, aside from Merry and Pippin, where he actually has a personality/ sense of humor/ backstory. But man... the movies... I pretty much cringe every time Orlando opens his mouth.
So. I have basically come up with a design as far away as I can possibly get from the blonde, poncy movie Legolas. I cropped off all his hair and made it darker and angled out his face. Unfortunately, my version of Legolas does not coincide with the description of his father in The Hobbit, which gives him fair hair. So... let's just say Legolas takes after his mother. Maybe I'll draw her. Sorry Thranduil's a little scary looking.
I apologize to anyone I offended with my blatant Orlando-bashing.

I love orlando...

But your right, I'm missing some of the book humour

"I am off to find the sun!" -Legolas

Or something like that :P

I love your Legolas. :D I tend to picture him as a blonde, but he looks really good with dark hair. Thranduil is awesome too. I have to admire Thranduil's cape and Legolas' aumlet.

I agree with the comment that Orlando can't act. When I watched the movies for the first time, I just ignored him and focused on a rock or other character behind him. The things that caught my attention were the fact that his eye color was very inconsistant (One minute it's brown, than grey, then blue, next thing you know, it'll be green.), and that Orlando bears a startling resemblance to my older brother.

 Haha! I know, the backgrounds are a lot more interesting than his acting.

And thanks! :)

You should be happy to know that the books describe Legolas as "dark" rather then "fair".

even though I've always imagined Legolas as a blonde, I DESPISE Bloom in his role. I mean, all he did was prance around and look brainless!
Your version is very cute and refreshing :)

I agree, Orlando Bloom can't act, and yay for dark-haired Legolas! Does it really say that he was probably dark in the Letters? I always supposed that the default was dark, especially for Sindar, but I wasn't sure. Would rock if it was.

I think that's the big debate... it doesn't actually explicitly say anywhere whether he's fair or dark-haired. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about all things Tolkien, but I always got the impression that he should be dark.

Hrm... I was never entirely sure, I guess I started saying he was dark to try to rebel against Bloomitis, but it seems to work better. I'm sure I read somewhere else that Tolkien said that Thranduil shouldn't have been blond because it didn't make any sense, him being Sindarin, but I can't remember where that was. *broods*

In Fellowship, he does make a reference to Legolas' "dark head" against the sky, but most people argue that it's because the scene takes place in the dead of night. I think it's like any fictional character; there's a certain amount of interpretation left to reader discretion.

This is just getting creepy that you share my opinions. I commend everything the Peter Jackson did for the movies, except for his choice of Legolas. It just goes to show that you cannot just pick up random people who only just came out of acting school. It's also irksome that people have actually thought him talented enough to be in other movies as well.

You can blend in a forest with platinium hair...you just cover it with a hood!:lmao:

No seriously, I like the way you try and go beyond the film's view of carbon-copy blonde elves. I always thought of Legolas being blonde, seen the backstory he gets in Tolkien's notes pertaining to his lineage, but I think even the Master didn't know for sure...the only illustration of the Fellowship that was done in Tolkien's lifetime had Legolas with a hood over his head, hiding for all eternity the holy truth...

I swear, the two greatest mysteries in LotR : does the Balrog actually *have* wings, and what colour hair does Legolas *really* have???

It's the kind of argument that has otherwise very busy/intelligent people sitting around a hot teapot until into the early hours of the morning and yelling at each-other...:lmao:
Needless to say, the pic is great!

YES! anothe artist who draws a brown-haired Legolas! FANTASTIC! I also like how you've drawn him with shorter hair. It's good to see some variation. As much as I enjoyed the movies I hate that people are forgetting to look to their imaginations to draw Tolkien characters. Like you, my Legolas was always dark. He's a wood-elf! How are you gonna blend in with the trees and be silent and cool if your hair is platinum?

Heh, as much as I am a fan of Orlando (sorry) I have to admit, I LIKE your Legolas. XD He looks...younger and more mischeivious if you ask me. And so cute! Heh. I like Legolas in your style, good work.

OH shiny! And mad props for not making Legolas blond... I won't go on a rant about how Tolkien actually said that if an elf's haircolor isn't specified, it reverts to black/really dark brown.... Again, Mad props.

And where did Tolkien say that? I want to print it out in massive letters and post it on my wall. ;)

Um, I think it was in the Letters. I can't be sure, though, it's been years since I read it...

And it was a huge vindication when I found that, like, OH YES!

Actually Legolas was described as "dark-haired". The only reason people tend to believe him to be blond despite that is that the scene where this was mentioned took place by night. But really, have you ever seen a blonde, whose hair looked really dark by night? It actually tends to glow.

I know, I've read and reread that scene over and over again. But in The Hobbit, it does actually say that Thranduil has fair hair. So I dunno. I like to think that it's up to the artist's discretion.

More or less yes, but do consider that Thranduil's wife is most likely dark haired, since chances are he secured his position by marrying a Silvan elf (He seems to be the type to do that). I

This is true. Ah well, I suppose in the cosmic sense of things, Legolas' hair color doesn't rank very high in importance. ;)

I agree that Mr. Bloom can't really act, though I admit he has some charisma. But his hair in the movie is altogether too blonde, yuk.

Yeah, I mean, I get the whole ethereal look the blondeness is supposed to give him... but ... he's a woodelf. He fends off spiders from the elves' realm in Mirkwood/Greenwood. I always felt like the movie version needed to be more earthy.
I could also go off on a long tangent about how when Bilbo and the dwarves are escaping all the Elves are drunk and partying, etc, etc, but I'll leave that alone. :blahblah:
